Sewing fancy

2 July 2008 at 5:00 pm (Thoughts) (, , , )

Truth be told, I’m a girly kind of girl. I learnt to dance ballet at 3 (although I never quite became the ballerina in the end), I’m into bellydancing and Argentine tango, I love the arts and calligraphy (Western and Eastern), I’m enamoured with ikebana, pink is one of my favourite colours, and most tellingly, I eat with my hands using only 2 fingers (my sewing fingers, nonetheless).

I first picked up a needle when I was about 6 — my (paternal) grandmother had given me a cross-stitch project to do, and I took the task so seriously! In school, we were taught to use the manual sewing machine and I was simply fascinated. My love affair with the needle never quite went away. I didn’t think much of it — it was something I liked to do, like eating curry puffs on a balmy Saturday afternoon, or sitting by the pool under the shade of a coconut tree.

But some fancies will never go away completely, and I can never get enough of the elation and the satisfaction of a completed project. So, this blog is dedicated to my love for needlecraft … sewing, crochet and embroidery mostly, and the things I am able to coax out of my (maternal) grandmother’s manual sewing machine.

My Button-Up Bag with Playful KittenMy current focus is on making reusable eco-bags, because plastic bags are not on anymore! I call mine the “Button-Up Bag”, which folds up into a neat rectangle and fits into my regular big bag without getting tangled up with the rest of my things.

My latest brainwave includes a cute fabric carrier for my Thermos flask. I drink hot drinks all the time, and it makes sense to use a Thermos flask instead of boiling water every hour or so. We’ll see where that goes, soon enough!

If you’re a needlecraft lover, too, drop me a line — tell me about your needlecrafty adventures or share your blog!
